William Jones

William Jones discusses his journey to becoming a corporate board member. He emphasizes that one does not need to be a CEO to serve effectively on a board. Jones’ first board experience was with the Price REIT, where he was recruited by Sol Price, a mentor. Jones was able to contribute meaningfully and build relationships with fellow directors.

Jones highlights the importance of racial diversity on corporate boards, but stresses that inclusion is essential for diversity to yield benefits. He believes that diverse boards lead to richer discussions and more innovative problem-solving. To be effective as a minority board member, Jones advises building genuine relationships with fellow directors, focusing on making meaningful contributions, and learning to challenge constructively while staying “in the room.”

Looking to the future, Jones feels optimistic about the prospects for increased black representation on boards, despite some headwinds. He believes that tying DEI to business outcomes is the most effective approach, but also acknowledges the moral imperative. While not a proponent of strict term limits or quotas, Jones sees value in board refreshment and intentional action to create diverse teams. His parting advice to aspiring minority directors is to prepare diligently, seek out mentors, have the courage to speak up diplomatically, listen attentively, and strive to create long-term value for all stakeholders.
