George Brown

George Brown discusses his career trajectory from accounting to law, and how his diverse professional experiences have prepared him for board service. He emphasizes the importance of serving on nonprofit boards to gain governance experience and recommends getting involved in leadership networks to enhance skills and expand one’s network. Brown believes that relationships and networks are key to securing board positions.

When discussing his own board service, Brown highlights the importance of being prepared, thoughtful, and engaged in meetings. He aims to contribute meaningfully to discussions and provide clarity on procedural and governance issues.

Brown believes that diversity in the boardroom is crucial for avoiding groupthink and ensuring a variety of perspectives. He hopes that Black representation on corporate boards will continue to increase modestly over the next five years, driven by factors such as institutional shareholder pressure, disclosure requirements, and employee and consumer demands.

Brown suggests that current Black directors can help increase diversity by networking, building relationships, and convincing their white peers to take a leadership role in making boards more representative. He also emphasizes the importance of nominating and governance committees being intentional and systematic in their search processes. Brown proposes that an institution or university group could collect and publish data on companies’ racial commitments and progress to promote transparency and accountability.
