Damian Wilmot’s story starts with his Jamaican grandmother who migrated to the U.S. in the 1960s and worked as a nurse. His parents followed and worked hard jobs with limited education, but valued education for Damian and his brother. Damian attended Boston Public Schools, then Trinity College, becoming the first in his family to attend a 4-year college. He enjoyed law and focused on legal issues and social justice in college. He clerked at the Connecticut Supreme Court, worked at law firms, then became Chief Litigation Counsel at Vertex Pharmaceuticals.
He joined his first corporate board in 2019 through a search company and personal connection to the Chair. Though busy, his CEO encouraged him to gain the director experience. His second board came via an existing contact. He carefully vets boards based on management, other directors, ability to add value, and readiness to commit time.
Damian believes nonprofit boards, especially universities facing crises, provide helpful training. His legal expertise matters less than running major functions like HR and Risk Management. In the boardroom, Damian first listens and learns before offering questions and advice to strengthen strategy and operations. He prepares thoroughly and supports management while protecting shareholder value.
Diverse boards lead to better performance, though progress is slowing lately. Intentional efforts and community support are vital to advance Black leaders. We must mentor emerging directors, share insights, and advocate beyond our own institutions.
