Dr. Wayne Frederick

Dr. Frederick believes that Presidents of Universities effectively serve as CEOs of complex businesses. His experiences leading Howard University, overseeing areas like multiple professional schools, real estate, a hospital, media stations and sports programs, developed skills transferable to corporate boards. He was appointed to his first board at the recommendation of a mentor. When considering boards, he evaluates who he would serve alongside and if there are opportunities to learn. He prefers boards aligned with his interests in business, technology, and social missions.

On boards, Dr. Frederick spends his first year listening and learning. He prepares extensively, asks questions, and gains knowledge before speaking substantively. He looks to facilitate participation from other directors to draw out perspectives. As a surgeon managing operating room teams during crises, he is adept at focusing discussions during challenges. He builds alliances through informal interactions outside board meetings. Dr. Frederick values diversity of experiences and perspectives, which lead to better decisions by exposing directors to different views. Excellence transcends artificial barriers; high performance earns respect. He is optimistic that an increasing number of qualified, excellent Black board candidates and receptive boards will continue diversifying directorships.

Participating on boards expands horizons and opportunities to help amplify humanity by improving services and products that enhance lives. While some company roles seem disconnected from social impact, ultimately conscientious performance reverberates, benefiting society. Board service is fulfilling and impactful.
