Larry Quinlan

Larry Quinlan grew up on the small Caribbean island of Saint Kitts. He was inspired by his parents to value education and had supportive Black role models,  including his teachers and the country’s Prime Minister. He studied in the Caribbean and got his MBA in New York, deciding to pursue a technology career instead
of sales. After 30 years rising through the ranks at Deloitte, Larry retired as their Global Chief Information Officer.

When considering boards, Larry focused on learning and remaining relevant in technology. He joined his first private board at a mentor’s suggestion, then public boards through relationships and search firms. Boards sought his technology expertise and global, large-scale leadership. He evaluates boards based on his ability to
contribute and learn, not just domain knowledge. Private boards move faster while public ones provide governance sophistication. Diversity brings benefit through varied perspectives.

On boards, Larry listens more than speaks, concentrating contributions where he adds most value. He builds allyships through openness, doing extra work, and demonstrating leadership. Imposter syndrome can motivate preparation. Success metrics should track trends, not hard targets.

Larry credits his career to helpful mentors and feels an obligation to give back. Board opportunities come through long-term relationships. Aspiring directors must prepare, serve nonprofits, develop expertise, and share knowledge. With persistence and mutual support, more diverse candidates can gain seats at the table.
